WHERE CAN I USE MY EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING?

WHERE CAN I USE MY EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING?

I am writing this blog about how Expressive Arts is used in the world because I get this question all the time.   I will try to cover all of the possibilities and options that I can think of, but I am always amazed at my students who find even more unique ways in which to use their training in expressive art and combine it with what they already are doing in the world.

Let begin ~ First, I usually prefer to speak to people over the phone about this topic because it is so vast that it is difficult to write about.

Dance Movement Therapy and Artistic Expression For Healing

Dance/Movement Therapy and Artistic Expression for healing

What does dance and moving our body have to do with art? The answer is EVERYTHING!  Have you ever put on upbeat music, and try to keep your body still?  Impossible, isn’t it?  Music moves through us and our bodies cannot help but move to the rhythm and beat.  As the music plays it moves our bodies, our emotions and that moves our energy.  As the energy moves, we begin to release and transform trapped or blocked emotions and memories.

WHAT IS ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT INTUITIVE ART?

WHAT IS INTUITIVE PAINTING

There is a lot of buzz around the painting town about intuitive painting.  But, WHAT ISINTUITIVE PAINTING? Intuition is independent of any reasoning process; or without rational thought.  Intuition is a prompting from an inner guidance or voice.  Traditional artistic training teaches us that we must have a plan.  We must block out of space and plan or color pallet.  However, in intuitive painting we suspend all of that reasoning.   Intuitive painting is not concerned with what color pallet you are ‘planning’ on using or what your plan is for a subject.

The Story of Aslan ~ My Hero’s Journey Through Art

My Hero's Journey
Throuth Painting

Art is a reflection of how we live our lives.  How we approach our art or painting is how we approach other parts of our lives.   Flora Bowley (my painting guru), said, ““Often, how we live is how we paint.”  What we do when being creative transfers into our daily lives and visa versa. In this blog, I am going to use Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey as a metaphor for painting and how this translates to daily life.

Aslan is a mysical lion in the movie called, 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.

There are many terms out there labeling the process of intuitive art.  But, no matter which label you give this process, the main ingredient is the same ~~ Self Trust!
Yes, I know, you thought I was going to talk about some new art-making method.  The process is the same across the board for all, trained and novel artists alike.

How Expressive Arts Therapy Is Used for Healing & Health

How Expressive Arts Therapy  Is Used for Healing & Health
By Yvette Lyons, Ph.D., Director of the Expressive Arts Therapy Dept. at the San Diego University for Integrative Studies

Art, Music, Drama and Dance Therapists have long been used for healing throughout time. The field of Expressive Arts Therapy is a growing field of practice used by many healing professionals from nurses, doctors, psychotherapist, occupational therapist and rehabilitation specialists. The Expressive Arts Therapy is the of use of the arts for healing and self enhancement.

So, you think you may want to add Art Therapy to your Practice?

Art has a natural way of helping people express what they can not find words for.  Since the language of image precedes the spoken word, image can access feelings and experiences that one may find it difficult to access by talking.  In art therapy, the use of color and form and image is a language all its own.  Emotionally recorded traumas and experiences that are stored in the emotional areas of the brain are activated during the art making process.  Neither client nor therapist need to have any artistic ability or training for art to work in the therapeutic process.

What is Transformational Arts?

What is Transformational Arts?

Someone recently wrote me and asked me about transformational arts.  What is Transformational Arts?  What is the art of transformation?  Or better,  How are the arts used for transformation?    Although I have been doing this work for quite some time, both personally and professionally, I really had to stop and think about defining this concept.

To start, let’s simply look at, What is Transformation?   Transformation is about change.
