WHERE CAN I USE MY EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING?

WHERE CAN I USE MY EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING?

I am writing this blog about how Expressive Arts is used in the world because I get this question all the time.   I will try to cover all of the possibilities and options that I can think of, but I am always amazed at my students who find even more unique ways in which to use their training in expressive art and combine it with what they already are doing in the world.

Let begin ~ First, I usually prefer to speak to people over the phone about this topic because it is so vast that it is difficult to write about.

BRAVE INTUITIVE PAINTING

Hello Expressive Arts Therapy Enthusiasts,

This year I was drawn to an artist who is teaching a form of art or she calls "Brave Intuitive Painting".  Her name is Flora Bowley.  I was drawn to this process at first because of the name, 'brave intuitive painting'.  I know it takes a certain amount of bravery to approach a blank canvas, and to release your creative spirit.  So, I wanted to see what this ‘brave intuitive painting’ was all about.  So, I joined this online painting e-course by Flora Bowley.

WHY ART AND EXPRESSIVE ARTS WORKS
WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Expressive Arts Therapy is a new field that is quickly gaining National and International recognition for it’s effectiveness in working with a variety of population dealing with a multitude of issues.   As a therapist trained in Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology and Expressive Arts Therapy, I have extensive experience working with various populations.  I have come to discover through my work, that I favor working with children and adolescents using Expressive Arts as my therapeutic modality.

Expressive Arts Therapy Seminar Sept. 2012

I guess by now, I should not be so amazed at how art heals and how art transforms.  BUT I AM!  Yes, I am in awe when I am able to witness other's lives and how they use the arts for healing.  The use of art, dance, drama and creative writing access parts of our body/mind that talk can not.   Our inner world becomes known in the process.  Our inner stories are told and the images that reside in the quiet spaces within emerge.
I just love this process.

At our most recent expressive arts therapy seminar, a community of amazing people from all around the world joined together, each from their own culture, and corner of the world to share their life experiences and shared their art.

Art Therapy with Chinese Exchange Students

A group of Chinese students participated in an art therapy project.  These students are here on a school program to tour the U.S.A .  During their stay here they had an opportunity to stay with American families and see the sights of beautiful San Diego.  Myself and my colleagues prepared a group art project for the students.  We used a large roll of white paper and tempra paints.   After sitting for the morning in an English class, the students were brought to a large semi-enclosed area where they were brought through some movement exercised to music, to help them stretch and loosten up.
